GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Selkirk Rex is produced by a dominant gene affecting the guard, down, and awn hairs. The curl is most prominent around the neck and tail. Guard hairs tend to have a slightly coarse texture. The coat is very dense and plush. The whiskers are curly. This is a medium to large cat with good balance between medium legs and body. Heavy boning gives the cat surprising weight. Females are less massive than males, but both sexes have definite jowls. Coat continues to develop until about 2 years of age, so kittens should be judged mainly on head and body type. Kittens are curly at birth, lose their coat, and begin to develop a curly coat again at about 8-10 months of age.

HEAD:

The head should be round and full-cheeked; forehead is rounded. The top of the head is gently rounded. The muzzle is short, with a nose stop which gives a very unique profile. The muzzle is clearly visible beyond the cheek. The squared-off muzzle creates an excellent showcase for curly whiskers. Medium, pointed ears are set well apart on the broad head. Eyes are round and set far apart.

BODY:

The muscular torso is rectangular. Legs are medium and substantially boned, complimented by large paws. There is a slight rise to the hindquarters. The tail is thick, medium and tapers slightly to a rounded tip.

COAT:

The thick, medium length coat is arranged in loose individual curls, particularly prominent in the neck and tail areas. Guard hairs are slightly coarse, but the overall effect is still soft and plush. The curliness of the coat on the saddle area of back is variable due to climate, seasons and hormones, particularly in the female. As the original Selkirk Rex carried the longhair gene, the Selkirk Rex Longhair is part of the breed group.

COLOR:

All color patterns are acceptable, attention being paid to clarity. The original cat carried the colorpoint gene. Eye color is independent of coat color.

ALLOWANCES:

White lockets are permitted. Kittens judged mainly on head and body type, as curly coat takes up to 2 years to develop.

Shape: Tapers slightly to a rounded tip. Thick.

Texture: Thick; arranged in loose individual curls. Soft and plush.
